Though developmental writing courses are often housed in composition programs, I am especially passionate about these courses. These materials are examples of the kind of support documents I create to assist students in completing their corequisite English course or preparing for the next course in their English sequence.

Teaching Tool: The Error Codes List
I use the “Error Codes” document as a teaching tool in most developmental or first-year composition courses. The list is not a replacement for in-class instruction, and students are already familiar with these concepts from lectures and workshops. This document asks students to take more of an active role in the revision process by locating explanations and implementing them on their own. In the developmental English classroom, I’ve found that these codes help students engage with my feedback without feeling criticized. Below, I’ve included some of the list, which includes explanations and remedies for common writing mistakes.
Teaching Tool: Levels of Editing
This exercise guides students through micro-level, mid-level, and macro-level revisions.
